PARAMBIKULAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY is situated in Chittur Taluk in the district of Palakkad in Kerala, India covers about 391 km sq. of land. The sanctuary is declared as UNESCO world heritage site. In 1973, it was established and declared as the wildlife sanctuary of India. This tiger reserve of India is also a biodiversity center of species of flora and fauna. Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is memorized for having the largest animals, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, birds and amphibian species as compared to other wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.
This is a breeding centre for them. Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a center of the animal, reptiles and mammal species like Ghariyal, Wolf, lizards, Langurs, Jackals, Muggar crocodiles, Mongoose, Macaque, Wild cats, Bengal tigers, leopards, Wild boar, Sambar, elephants, Nilgairi Tahr, Porcupine, Hare, Flying foxes, Hedgehogs, gaurs, sloth bears, sloth bears, king cobra, kukri snake, tortoise, viper, mountain skink, keelback, python, flying lizards, varanus, terrapin, rat snake, vine snake etc. Some of the bird, butterflies and amphibian species are spotted here which are darter, owl, eagle, hornbill, woodpecker, kingfisher, stork, parietalis, melastictus, tigerina, leaping frog, fuscus etc. and there are about 124 species of butterflies and about 47 species of underwater creatures.
