Assam History

You should know the history of Assam as it is a part of India. The name of this state was mentioned in Vedic literature, Buddhist literature and Tantric literature. This region is ruled under various reigns like Aryans, Mongoloids, Varman Dynasty, Ahoms and at last British. After passing the treaty of Yandaboo in 1826 AD between Burmese and British, both the powers achieved peace. Thus, British started concentrating on building and organizing the transportation, administration and communication in the state. Tea plantation, railway networks, oil and coal establishment was done by British in this state. Assam was divided into many states after Independence but later on Assam got released from other states and thus its own identity was created.

Assam Culture

The emergence of ethno-cultural groups led to the formation of culture of Assam. Assam galore abundance of traditional dance forms, musical instruments, cuisines, traditions, festivals, music, drama and traditional crafts which will definitely take your breath away. For development of Assamese grammar and language, Sanskritisation was acquired by the state. Some of the cultural traits of Assam are symbols, betel leaves, areca nut, traditional silk garments, hospitality and bamboo culture.

Thus, Assam comprises of three essential symbolic elements that are Xorai, Gamosa and Tamulpan. Different designs for occasions of Assam are being used since many years which are of dragon, Assamese lion, flying lion etc. Festivals that are celebrated in Assam are Bihu, Durga Puja, Eid-Ul-Fitr, Eid-Ul-Adha, Bohag, Kongali, Brahmaputra Beach Festival, Kaziranga Elephant Festival, Dehing Patkai Festival, Karbi Youth Festival, International Jatinga Festival, etc. Assam is rich in music, drama and dance. Some of the dance forms of Assam are Ankia Naat, Bihu Dance, Huchory, Bordoicikhla, Beula Dance, Banjar Kekan, Bhorial Nritya, Nimso Kerung, Deodhoni Nritya, Sattriya, Ojapali, Ka Shad Inglong Kardom, etc.

The dance of Assam is incomplete without music so musical instruments of Assam are cymbals, drums, flutes, string instruments, pipes etc. the favorite lip smacking cuisines of Assam are dal, masoor jool, bhat, mangso, bhaji, fish curries, orxaak, bird dishes, mutton dishes and pork dishes. People of Assam are usually involved in making handicrafts creatively. They do cotton and silk weaving, mask making, toy making, instruments making, jewelry making etc.
